Water is the principle of all things

The first philosopher. By asking 'What is everything made of?' and answering with a natural substance rather than a god, he inaugurated Western rational inquiry. Aristotle called him the founder of philosophy. He also predicted a solar eclipse and proved geometric theorems — the prototype of the philosopher-scientist.
