The most brilliant intellectual of the middle Byzantine period. The Chronographia is a gallery of imperial portraits drawn with psychological acuity and literary flair that rivals Tacitus. He revived Neoplatonic philosophy and embodied the dangerous life of the Byzantine court intellectual.
