Composition VII — the invention of abstraction
The painter who took the final step — eliminating the object entirely. His theoretical writings (Concerning the Spiritual in Art) argued that color and form could express inner states directly, like music. The Compositions are the first fully abstract masterpieces, and they opened a door that has never closed.
