Matthias Grunewald
Isenheim Altarpiece — agony and transfiguration
The anti-Durer. Where Durer pursued classical harmony, Grunewald painted suffering with an expressionist intensity that has no parallel until the twentieth century. The Isenheim Altarpiece — its Crucifixion a body covered in plague sores, its Resurrection an explosion of supernatural light — is one of the most powerful paintings ever made.
