Assumption of the Virgin — Parma's dome

The painter who dissolved the ceiling. His Assumption of the Virgin in Parma Cathedral — a vortex of ascending figures spiraling into infinite light — invented illusionistic dome painting and pointed the way to the Baroque. His soft sfumato and sensuous grace anticipate the Rococo.
